Likely never before have you owned a smartly designed patterned shirt that features armadillos. Okihasi makes that possible with its Florida Flatwoods men’s shirt. Register your support for undercard species and the piney woods, an environment as synonymous with the South as William Faulkner and cheese grits. Given the chance, would the writer of “The Bear” have worn an Okihasi? No question!

Flatwoods, while diminishing due to development pressure, cover much of Florida and the Southeast region of the United States. When people refer to the South’s piney woods, they have the flatwoods, areas characterized by conifers and palmettos, in mind. The flatwoods are home to familiar mammals such as black bears, deer, possums and coons and to endangered species including the gopher tortoise and the red-cockaded woodpecker. The latter occupies an extremely narrow niche, relying upon mature longleaf pine trees and forests maintained by controlled burns. Red-cockaded woodpeckers excavate nesting cavities in living pines of 80-100 years old. According to the Audubon Society, RCWs live in extended family groups headed by a pair of adults assisted in their nesting by up to four additional birds. The red cockade for which the bird is named is a small patch of feathers behind the eye of the male and is usually hard to see in the field. At one time, the Panama City Lions Clubs used live tortoises in its annual fundraising Gopher Races, but that practice was suspended when the reptiles were accorded protected status. Burrows dug by gopher tortoises are used by many other species. -Steve Bornhoft

More on the Pine Flatwoods ecosystem of Northern Florida.

The Flatwoods are one of the more predominate ecosystems found throughout Florida and the Southeastern regions of the United States. A variety of pine tree species and saw palmettos are the dominate vegetation found in these areas. They are also home to numerous mammal species like black bears, bobcats, white-tailed deer, armadillos, opossums, raccoons, and of course, grey squirrels. Some of the common bird species you can find here are the red-tailed hawk, barred owl, blue jay, cardinal, numerous woodpecker species, and our state bird, the mockingbird. It is also home to the endangered gopher tortoise that is considered a keystone species in this area, because they dig burrows that numerous other species use as shelter.

This ecosystem is under constant threat due to habitat fragmentation from commercial and residential development, and should be protected more to maintain one of Florida's largest ecosystems.
