Florida’s coral reefs—known as the Florida Reef Tract—are the only extensive coral reef system in the continental United States, stretching from the Dry Tortugas through the Florida Keys and up the southeast coast. These reefs are incredibly important because they support biodiversity, protect coastlines from storms, and provide economic benefits through tourism, fishing, and recreation. They also serve as nursery habitats for many marine species. However, Florida’s reefs are under serious threat. Rising ocean temperatures cause coral bleaching, while diseases have devastated many coral species. Additional pressures include pollution, overfishing, coastal development, and ocean acidification. Together, these threats have led to significant declines in coral cover, making conservation and restoration efforts critical for the future of Florida’s reefs.
