Sunshine Mimosa - Men’s Floridian Shirt
An Okihasi shirt is an intersection where nature meets style. Case in point: The Okihasi Sunshine Mimosa men’s shirt, which capitalizes on the vibrant hues of this distinctive flower and of the myriad pollinators that visit it. Wear this shirt, inspired by natural designs, and you’ll find joy in giving a nod to Florida’s spectacular flora and fauna.
The Sunshine Mimosa, a type of ground cover, carpets the landscape with delicate, fern-like foliage and whimsical puffball pink flowers. Here is a plant almost playful. Its flowers bring to mind the Truffula trees in The Lorax by Dr. Suess. As an alternative to turf lawns, the mimosa consumes a lot less water and does well in Florida’s sandy soils. Its nectar is prized by pollinators including the zebra longwing, eastern tiger swallowtail, cloudless sulphur, sweat bee and carpenter bee. Each pompom-like grouping of flowers, called an inflorescence, of the mimosa is composed of many tiny blooms that together form a ball about an inch in diameter. Prominent pink stamens topped with yellow anthers give the plant its distinctive appearance, notes the Florida Wildflower Association. Flowerheads top long stalks. Leaves are featherlike in appearance. Stems are hairy. Seeds develop in inch-long rough pods. Here, for sure, was a plant made for Theodor Geisel to fall in love with. Okihasi depictions of the Southern mimosa are far less flamboyant than those of Dr. Suess, but they are brilliant enough to reliably start conversations. - Steve Bornhoft

More about Sunshine Mimosa and its pollinators below.
Sunshine Mimosa (Mimosa strigillosa) is a vibrant native Florida ground-cover that carpets the landscape with its delicate, fern-like foliage and whimsical, puffball pink flowers. These flowers resemble a smaller version of Dr. Seuss's truffula trees from the book "The Lorax". In addition, this native plant is not only a great alternative to water-intensive turf lawns, but also does well in the sandy soil types found throughout Florida and thrives in the hot Florida climate. Furthermore, their flowers provide nectar to a host of native pollinators like the Zebra Longwing, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Cloudless Sulpher, Sweat Bee, and the Carpenter Bee. As small as this native Florida plant might be, it deserves to shine for the beauty and ecological benefit it provides.
