Uncle Pappy is a kicked-back, popular Internet personality known for his positive posts and his fondness for the environment. At Okihasi, we have a favorite Pappy post that finds him beneath a hat, behind sunglasses and sipping coffee while standing in chest-high water amid lily pads. Our Water Lilies shirt is designed to echo that vibe while ensuring the ultimate in comfort with its lightweight, breathable viscose fabric.

The green heron tiptoes its way along the circular, floating steppingstones, lunching on the insects they attract and looking to ambush a minnow or two. A slip and fall could prove disastrous. Florida water lilies attract creatures big and small, from the top and bottom of food chains. So it is that a leopard frog is engulfed by a largemouth bass as it tries to kick its way from one green raft to another. The bass, itself, best exercises caution. Gators are about. Water lilies, often called lily pads, are much more than a pretty face. Their leaves provide shade and shelter for numerous species that hang out among them, and their massive roots stabilize bottom sediment. The plants absorb excess nitrogen and phosphorous contained in fertilizers, thus helping to maintain healthy water quality. Pablo Picasso painted water lilies. The French impressionist Claude Monet painted a series of 250 lily paintings over a period of decades after diverting a river to create his water garden. They have been seen as symbols of peace and are often associated with tranquility. But their beauty and their serene quality may be lost sight of by the angler who hooks one of the sturdy plants. They are unforgiving. - Steve Bornhoft

More about Florida's Water Lilies

The native Florida water lilies (Nymphaea odorata) plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and balance of Florida’s freshwater ecosystems. Not only do they create essential habitats for aquatic insects, fish, amphibians, and other wildlife, their leaves also provide shade and shelter from predators for small fish and invertebrates. In addition, their roots stabilize sediments in lakes, ponds, and slow-moving rivers, which helps reduce water turbidity (cloudiness), and they help prevent shoreline erosion. Water lilies also contribute to oxygenating the water during photosynthesis, which is vital for maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems by providing oxygen for fish and other aerobic organisms. Moreover, water lilies play an important role in regulating nutrient levels in our freshwater ecosystems. By asbording excess nitrogen and phosphorus from feritilizer runoff they help maintain healthy water quality and prevent eutrophication. Finally, their flowers attract pollinators such as native bees, beetles, flies, and butterflies. Overall, our native water lilies are key to maintaining a strong balance in our freshwater ecosystems and promoting biodiversity. This pattern was inspired by Uncle Pappy (on Instagram) and his water lilies. Thank you Uncle Pappy for being a source of Floridian positivity and thoughtfulness!
